With shortstop Victor Cortez leading the charge, the Cancun Toros defeated the Detroit Demons, 8-6, at Demon's Lair at Laser Park. Cortez, who is tied for 2nd in the Champions in doubles with 37, went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Pedro Martini, the winning pitcher, improved to 10-7. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 4. Samuel Smoltz recorded the save, making him 5 for 7.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Napoleon Solo? The Cancun right fielder had a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Toros on top, 7-4. For the game, Solo had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Cortez said after the game.
The defeat makes Detroit 40-43.
